I have to say I’ve been feeling a little tension lately, at home Im trying to be patient and understanding, then it occurred to me that I never really thought about how I would be as a parent, we’re never really ‘taught’ how to parent. I had it in mind that I would spank, that I would do time outs, but then when my son was born I literally melted and knew that was not the case, and will never be the case, ever.
One thing that I do love about this new generation of parents is they don’t tell other parents what to do— there’s all kinds of unsolicited advice but honestly, whatever works, works. As long as your children feel loved and happy at home, learn to express their emotions in a healthy way, I think it’s okay. Parenting is tricky in the toddler stages because you’re raising a little human who is just learning about the world and how to express emotions and get used to all these changes, and it’s scary for them.
Every young mom I’ve ever met was so loving, they never complained once about being a SAHM or raising their babies because as moms- it’s just what you do. The Dads of this generation are so involved and I love that. Gone are the days where they expect nothing to do with diapers, or go to work all day and come home expecting a hot dinner and the house clean. Life just doesn’t work that way anymore, it’s HARD. If you are a super mom who can manage to do all that, being sleep deprived.. and parent your child- that’s amazing (tell me your secret!!!! 😂🥹)
I know some moms give in and let their children have soda or sweets because it’s just not worth the fight and tears sometimes, and some, including myself, couldn’t imagine doing that, but that’s okay. Every kid is different and every parenting style is different.
The truth is nowadays I feel like the first year was a literal blur, that parenting didn’t really occur to me until recently when my son started getting more mobile and curious about the world, and I’m grateful for my cousins who have kids because I learn from them, as well as the community of moms here.
Every relationship and stage as couples, to parents is different and I am grateful my husband and I both stay open and loving to the people around us. I would be a liar and hypocrite if I were to say that I didn’t need forgiveness and support, so this is just a reminder to myself to give that as much as it’s been given to me. I’m not a perfect person, no one is, and I don’t expect that from others, either !
If you’re a new mom or dad, and are worried about your babies— I say you’re already a great parent and doing a great job! Don’t worry about everything else. Sometimes it comes, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s like a muscle you train again and again and keeping healthy boundaries is not only important for yourself, but others, and your baby.
Not sure where to end, but I am grateful for those reading this, and please feel free to send me a dm on instagram about what you think, how you’re doing ! Or call me! I love a good catchup chat 💛
