Breastfeeding: My Journey with Low Milk Supply

A lady from WIC told me that “Formula is hard on a baby’s stomach”. As a mother, I was determined to give my baby the best nutrition, but my body couldn't produce enough breast milk. I found help from several lactation consultants, took supplements, and tried to pump on a schedule, but nothing seemed to work. It was frustrating and disheartening because I so wanted to give my baby the gift of breastfeeding and love as a mother. Nothing was working no matter how much effort I put in, switched my medications, and I would often cry in guilt thinking if only I could soothe my son and feed him myself.

I later realized that many narratives around breastfeeding can make mothers feel guilty and inadequate for not being able to breastfeed. I also learned that formula is a viable option for many mothers, and it is not "hard on a baby's stomach" as I was told. I want to encourage other mothers out there who may be going through the same thing as I did to know that it's okay if breastfeeding doesn't work out for you. It doesn't make you any less of a good mother. As long as your baby is healthy and nourished, that matters most.

The main thing I’ve reconciled is this: a fed baby is a happy baby. Yes, "Fed is best", mama! "Formula is hard on a baby’s stomach" but what else is? Not having anything to eat. I thank God for science & technology today so that my baby can be well-fed and happy. I thank God that He gave me a big family who loves my son and that we can take care of him with resources in the community.

Oftentimes, people will say what they will and will never know what it’s like to be in your shoes. Please be kind.  And for other moms who have felt this, know what a person says is a reflection of them, not you. You’re doing great.

Personally, I am sensitive to the narratives & being bombarded daily by messages. I would see videos of moms stacking their milk or freezing it while putting away the Hakka that I was planning to use when I was pregnant.

Let’s support all moms, moms who breastfeed, and moms who decide to formula feed (mastitis, pain, mental health, low milk supply).

You are a great mom either way. I love my son and support all the new mamas out there caring for their babies. Let’s not put each other down with narratives out there but support each other. Yes, we’ll always get comments & advice, but ultimately, you know what’s best for your child/situation AND you. Your health is important, too, mama.
